Karen is currently in Seattle on her way to Aberdeen Washington, where the tall ship the Lady Washington calls her home. We are interviewing Captain Katherine Pogue today.
We featured the Lady Washington on the show in 2019 with her cannon battle with the Hawaiian Chieftain off of Pier 39 and her trip up the coast to Aberdeen. She has been close to home during the Pandemic, but she traditionally sails up and down the Paciific coast during the year with a full time live-aboard captain and crew, living the lifestyle of the sailors at sea over 200 years ago.
Grays Harbor Historical Seaport owns the Lady Washington.
THE HANDS ON SAILING PROGRAM
The volunteer sail training program Two Weeks Before the Mast (TWBM) is a 14-day crash course on life aboard a working tall ship. You will live, work, and sleep on the vessel as a member of the crew –sailing, and learning new skills each day. TWBM has served hundreds of people over the years, from teenagers to retirees. Many novice sailors who’ve participated in TWBM have gone on to become licensed Captains and Mates. Some join our crew to get up close and personal with history, to travel, or create lifelong friendships. Others join to start or grow their career as professional mariners. TWBM offers all this and more. Read below to start your adventure!
FOR THE YOUTH
Each year the Lady Washington engages thousands of students in a one-of-a-kind educational field trip, Voyage of Explorers. Our hands-on maritime heritage program provides inquiry-based lessons that begin in the classroom and conclude with unforgettable activities aboard the tall ship.
Voyage of Explorers is aligned with the Common Core Curriculum Standards for grades 4-6 and can be booked year round at any port we visit.
