We catch up with Navy Lieutenant Mitchell Kempisty who is preparing to join colleagues from both coasts, teaming to compete in the Shields Class Sailing Nationals hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, Newport, R.I. September 6-10, 2022.

Lt. Mitchell Kempisty is now in Newport, RI, attending Navy Department Head School in Newport,. You will remember that Mitch just graduated from the Monterey Naval Postgraduate School in December 20210 with a Masters degree in Astro Engineering.
He was the 2018 Naval Surface Forces Shiphandler of the Year and is the author of “Shiphandling You Will Not Learn from a Book,” U.S. Naval Institute, June 2020. Early 2023 he will report to USS Mason (DDG-87) in Mayport, Fla. as operations officer.
For his next tour, he is slated to USS MASON (DDG-87) as the Operations Officer.
A Laurel, MD native and Naval Academy graduate, LT Mitchell Kempisty is Surface Warfare Officer. Mitch served onboard USS TRUXTUN (DDG-103) out of Norfolk as the 1st LT and USS MONSOON (PC-4) out of Bahrain as the Executive Officer.
The NPSF Yacht Club: Monterey, CA
The Naval Postgraduate School Foundation Yacht Club (NPSFYC) offers sailing opportunities to all military members and their families, whether active duty, reserve, or retired.
Members can rent one of the clubs three rental boats. The club rents two Santana 22s named Cloud 9 and Rocketman, and one Pearson Electra 24 named Iris. The club also has a Shields class racing team, open to all members to freely participate.
The racing fleet consists of two Shields class boats named DeLaplaine and Meritage. Primarily racing against the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club during the season, NPSFYC also raced in the Shields class nationals in 2021. NPSFYC offers sailing classes to military members and families that have little experience and want to learn the art of sailing.
