California Offshore Racing Week

We interview Justin Nielson, MPYC Vice Commodore and Spinnaker Cup Regatta Chair reporting from the California Offshore Race Week. This annual event has been held for 9 years and Monterey Peninsula YC hosts the first leg finish and post party celebrations.

We are discussing the Spinnaker Cup – the first leg from SF to Monterey. Jubilant J/112e – a South Beach YC entrant in the first leg from SF to Monterey  —— places first in their division and first overall out of nearly 50 entrants

Congrats to Jubliant, a J/122e! Crew members: From left to right: Andrew and Patrick Wilkinson, Ross Werner, Kevin Wilkinson, and rigger Giles Combrisson.

Kevin and Ross have been racing for 25 years + locally and internationally – as has Kevin’s sons Patrick and Andrew who have grown up racing with dad at SBYC and as leaders in respective college sailing programs.

The entire crew ,and other entrants, are training for the Pac Cup – a transpacific race from SF to Hawaii coming up in July. The Spinnaker Cup is a qualifying race for the Pac Cup.

The 2nd leg aka Coastal Cup is in process right now – racing to Santa Barbara. Only 9 entrants are competing in all 3 legs – finishing in San Diego this coming weekend.

Organizing Yacht Clubs are Richmond YC, Encinal YC and St Francis YC.

Seattle’s Sloop Tavern YC has an entry in the competition as well as Santa Barbara YC whereas most of the entries are from the Bay Area.
