The Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) hosts the Lipton Cup Regatta with 10 Bay Area Yacht Clubs in a match race on J-22\u2019s. Three days of racing in three different arenas around the Bay.  Each day the venue and the skipper will change within a four person crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our returning guest today \u2013 Winston Bumpus \u2013 PICYA Staff Commodore and now President of RBOC- Recreational Boaters of CA \u2013 is a key player in the regatta management team. \u201cThis race showcases the best sailors on the Bay \u2013 rather than the best boats \u2013 because sometimes its the best boats that win.\u201d In this scenario the boats are all the same, the crew is the same and the terrain is challenging on the ever-changing Bay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"(Audio 112) Sail Sport Talk with Karen Lile and Rick Tittle: Karen Lile; Winston Bumpus\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/554948481?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regatta hosting Yacht Clubs are South Beach Yacht Club in SF on Friday June 18th, Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda on Saturday the 19th and the race home to St. Francis Yacht Club for the awards presentation Sunday afternoon \u2013 Father\u2019s Day June 20th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"290\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sailsporttalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/th.jpeg?resize=290%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2680\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sir Thomas Lipton first came to San Francisco Bay in 1912 to compete in 12-meter racing at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915.\u00a0 WWI interrupted plans but the Lipton Cup was raced in 1916, 1918, 1919, and 1920.\u00a0\u00a0At that time, the Cup was won by John Hanify.\u00a0With the death of Hanify, the 12- meter class also collapsed and the Cup itself was \u201clost\u201d for 40 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PICYA regained control of the Cup in 1960 when it was found at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trophy was displayed at the San Francisco Yacht Club for many years due to winning race teams. In the summer of 1976 a winning skipper and talented artist \u2013 Jim Dewitt- ended up racing for St Francis and won. Therefore transferring the trophy to the St. Francis.Yacht Club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tragedy hit when the Cup melted in the St. Francis YC fire of 1976.\u00a0 Then a new trophy was built in the image of one of the 12-meter yachts. This trophy is on display at the St. Francis YC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good luck to the teams!<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 18-20th, 2021 the race is on!
