Raineri
World Sailing Inclusion Championships — Mussanah, Oman, December 2025

When sailors from around the globe gathered on the waters of Mussanah, Oman last December for the World Sailing Inclusion Championships, we weren’t just racing against the wind — we were racing toward a new vision of what sailing can be. This historic event wasn’t simply a regatta; it was a global statement that inclusion, excellence, and high-performance competition belong in the same sentence.

For me, the journey to Oman carried special meaning. Just weeks earlier, on October 7, 2025, I returned from Tanzania, where I and eight other blind climbers set a world record by becoming the largest group of blind athletes ever to summit Mount Kilimanjaro — or any of the Seven Summits, for that matter. From the highest point in Africa to the waters of the Arabian Sea, the message was the same: vision is not about sight — it’s about purpose.

Building an International Blind Sailing Team

Our blind fleet team was truly international:
Ginny Duff, blind helmsperson from Toronto, Canada
Walter T. Raineri, blind sailor from San Francisco, California, USA
Rhys Cashin, sighted tactician from Canada, and Paris Sasarman, sighted crew from Canada

Organizing this campaign was as complex as any professional sailing program — and in some ways, more demanding. Coordinating training across borders, aligning travel logistics, managing equipment transport, fundraising, sponsorship outreach, and aligning schedules across time zones required months of planning and persistence. But the greatest challenge wasn’t logistical — it was human.

We had never sailed together before Oman.

The Steep Learning Curve

Our first in-person meeting wasn’t in a training harbor. It wasn’t in a familiar marina. It was in Oman, at the World Sailing Inclusive Development Programme, just days before racing began.

We had to become a team in real time.

We had to learn each other’s communication styles, decision-making rhythms, stress responses, strengths, and instincts — all under the pressure of an international championship. For blind fleet racing, there are no technological shortcuts. Performance depends on trust, communication, timing, spatial awareness, and precision teamwork. Every maneuver, every call, every tactical decision must be executed with clarity and confidence.

The learning curve was steep — and immediate.

We trained hard, adapted fast, and built trust quickly. What normally takes months of sailing together had to happen in days. But something powerful happens when people are united by purpose: progress accelerates.

Racing as One Crew

When the starting sequences began, we weren’t four individuals — we were one system. Ginny’s calm, confident helming, Rhys’s tactical precision, Paris’s consistency and reliability, and the shared situational awareness between blind and sighted sailors created a rhythm that only teamwork can produce. Then the first horn of the first race. Rhys guessed a right shift when all others went left and within minutes we were in first place. Could it be that easy? No way. The wind died and we struggled to get to the first mark. We were still well in first place when the November Flag was hoisted Race Abandoned for too much time to the first mark. Darn! Reset and start again.

Every race demanded adaptability. Wind shifts, fleet pressure, unfamiliar waters, and the intensity of international competition tested us constantly. But every leg of every race reinforced the same truth: inclusion doesn’t dilute performance — it elevates it.

More Than a Championship

The World Sailing Inclusion Championships are more than a sporting event — they are a blueprint for the future of sailing. They show what’s possible when opportunity replaces limitation, and when access replaces assumption.

From Kilimanjaro to Oman, from mountains to oceans, I’ve learned that the greatest achievements don’t come from perfect conditions — they come from courageous people willing to step into the unknown together.

Our team did exactly that.

We didn’t just race in Oman —
we proved that connection builds confidence,
that diversity builds strength,
and that inclusion builds champions.

This championship wasn’t just history in the making —
it was the future, already underway.

Walter T.
