Ole Sal reports for Sail Sport talk from Madeira, off the Coast of Portugal, on the need for Safe Havens and Harbors for the 300 or more captains of yachts who will be returning from the Caribbean and also the 200 or more yachts who will be sailing to their homes in Europe in Europe in a few weeks. These trips are not recreational, but necessary for survival.
Rough weather conditions and the need to refuel and provision are important maritime needs permitted by Maritime law, but these unusual times during the Pandemic, require governments to get involved to set up quarantine harbors or marinas to protect both the captains and their boats, but also the populations ashore. No harm intended by anyone, but it could be an unsafe situation for sailors if governments don’t take quick action before the hurricane season requires these boats travel north.
