Join us as we interview Michael on his personal history with the bi-annual Pac Cup Regatta – a 2070 mile sailing race from San Francisco to Honolulu established in 1980. He has won and placed over the years on Oaxaca – a 50 foot Santa Cruz built for open ocean racing.
Nearly 70 boats registered at the time of this interview May 31, 2022. The competition is fierce and the struggle to cross the Pacific is real. This is a hard won race with 40+ years of technical advances shaving off days from the 80’s and 90’s timing- for that matter still shaving off hours each passing year.
Not everyone finishes. Safety first when it comes to wind ripped sails and occasional de-mastings.
The reward is the race party at the end at Kaneohe Yacht Club – where family and friends fly over to meet the finishing crews and celebrate two weeks after the race start.
In 2022 the race begins July 4th – if you are near the Golden Gate Bridge – its a site to be held. The first division of about 7 or 8 starts the races – the fist 3 days the toughest.
The Pacific Cup Yacht Club was formed to run the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco Bay to Hawaii – committed to running a race that is competitive, fun, and safe, they operate the race with a focus on preparation and openness to a wide range of entrants, from tiny double handers to mega yachts and from family adventures to well-tuned racing syndicates.
