Captain Donald Lawson takes on the world!

We are interviewing the Captain on his Dark Seas Project ( a foundation ) as he travels the West Coast in May 2022 drumming up support for his many quests.

The quest? To set 33 world records onboard his ORMA 60 Trimaran DEFIANT and to inspire others to pursue their dreams. Just as he did…and continues to do!

Captain Lawson began sailing at age 9 in Baltimore, MD. He began dreaming of the oceans and the places sailing could take him. As a young man he met Bruce Schwab in 2002- the first American sailor to finish the 2000 Vendee Globe and began to work on Bruce’s boat – learning far more skills. Later he became a US Sailing Instructor at the Baltimore Downtown Sailing Center, than the US Naval Academy in Annapolis and eventually was hired to teach in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.

Captain Lawson has sailed well over 25,000 miles as teacher, delivery skipper, and crew.

Captain Lawson has the pleasure of serving as Chair of US Sailing’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, with a focus on helping US Sailing and the sailing community at large expand its reach into non-traditional sailing communities.
