Karen Lile interviews PICYA Staff Commodore Patti Mangan about the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association’s Opening Day on San Francisco Bay. Held annually on the last Sunday of April- Opening Day is a boat parade tradition that goes back to the 1800’s.

In 2023 the theme -Broadway on the Bay – inspired by PICYA Staff Commodore Liz Allison – brought out several clever winning interpretations amongst the 60+ entries in the annual competitive boat parade along the San Francisco city waterfront. This year the wind was up, the waves were whipping and it took an effort to keep the boats in-line and holdng steady as they took turns passing the Committee boat – aka Luxe Cabernet Sauvignon – filled with members of Northern California Yacht Clubs and the Parade Judges.

The competition is passionate with several categories: flags, annual theme, youth, power boats vs sailboats. and more. Trophies are won and memories are made.
