Interview with sailing dynamo Linda Lindquist

Tune in on our featured interview with Linda Lindquist for an overview of the GL52 Winter Series racing in Key West, the results, and her plans for the future.

The GL52 North American fleet kicked off the 2024 racing season at the Southernmost Regatta, the first in a series of winter events called the GL52 Winter Series, which includes the Key West Cup presented by Quantum Sails from February 15-18, 2024.

Five of the most competitive GL52 teams raced in ten races over five days off Key West. The teams: Victor Wild’s (San Diego, Calif.) Fox; Chris Duhon’s (Key Largo, Fla.) Mockingbird; Larry Landry and Paul McDowell’s (Newport, R.I.) Prospector; David Team’s (Newport Beach, Calif.) Vesper; and Doug & Dalton DeVos’s (Holland, Mich.) Windquest.

Linda has blazed trails in the all-male world of offshore yacht racing, sailing on over 100 teams in the past 30+ years. Winning two world championships in 2004 and 2009, she thrives in high-risk, stretch-goal team environments. Making history as a member of America3, the first and only All-Women’s team to compete for the America’s Cup, she simultaneously competed as a team member and spearheaded their highly successful sponsorship program.

Prior to America3, Linda drove the marketing and branding for the world’s largest marine paint company, creating new product lines in the off-shore sport fishing, bass and high-performance sailing markets. As Publisher of Yachting Magazine (Times Mirror), she leveraged her grand-prix sports success and 15-years of brand building in the luxury goods market, to create an array of non-endemic business opportunities.

Thanks to strong fleet building in the Great Lakes, as many as 14 GL52s will participate in the 2024 season; events are planned in Florida (GL52 Winter Series), the Great Lakes and Newport, R.I. later this year. (Photo credit: Felipe Juncadella)

The GL52 Winter Series is intended to encourage like-minded TP52 type boat owners, with a healthy mix of Corinthian and Pro sailor crews, to compete in similarly configured boats under the ORC on a Time-on-Time basis in a group of buoy races that form the winter series. It is sanctioned by the North American GL52 fleet.

The Southernmost Regatta, powered by Sailing Inc., is a fun, sustainable event that features five consecutive days of high-quality racing on the picturesque blue waters of Key West, Fla. The event is open to One Design and ORC Racing/Cruising Keelboats. “With more than 30 years of racing in Key West, the GL52 is one of the premier fleets at The Southernmost Regatta,” said Regatta Chairman Martin Kullman.
