Sail Sport Talk President and Host Karen Lile and US Rugby D1A Commissioner Kevin Battle met at the final San Francisco Grand Prix Sail GP match race that was won by Team Australia and Tom Slingsby, watching from the Golden Gate Yacht Club. They discovered that International Sailing Fans are Rugby fans too. Not only that, at the US Collegiate level, most of the colleges and universities that have Rugby Teams also have Sailing Teams. Sports Byline is the 24/7 Sports Broadcasting Network that represents all sports. We depart from the strictly sailing theme today, to talk about how the fans of Sailing and Rugby crossover and the friendship between Karen Lile and Kevin Battle.
About US Rugby
GPUS College Rugby District 15s is broken up into four divisions: DI-A, DI-AA, DII and NSCRO. The top three layers are governed by USA Rugby, while NSCRO is an independent competition. There’s another independent competition, the Varsity Cup, which consists of Cal, BYU, Utah, Air Force, Dartmouth, Notre Dame and Navy. All of those teams are former DI-A teams, and all but Air Force are current DI-AA teams.
In addition to commissioning DI-A, Kevin Battle serves on the College Competitions Committee, coaches DI-AA Santa Barbara City College and runs the Santa Barbara Rugby Academy. Battle coached UCSB for 12 years. For more information: https://www.d1arugby.com
