Seaward’s Captain Jay Grant

Monday, April 6th, 2020, when much of the pandemic news is darker, there is a ray of light on the Schooner Seaward. After sheltering south of Point Conception weathering a storm and gale winds, Seaward and its Captain and crew sailed up the California coast. Seaward sailed under the Golden Gate at 8:30pm Monday night April 6th 2020. Follow Seaward here.
Seaward’s crew is healthy, and will have many stories to tell about their unique “quarantine voyage” return from Mexico. Seward is telling its 5,000 followers that heir experience may serve as a metaphor about overcoming the challenges of the pandemic: Keep your distance, hunker down, be ready to change course–and you will make it safely home.

This is Captain Jay Grant’s first season as the Captain of the Schooner Seaward, and his first season with Call of the Sea, the non-profit that runs the Seaward. Jay’s introduction to sailing began with his father back in the late 1960s on small sailing dinghies and later progressed to larger yachts. He has been a USCG commercial skipper since the early 1980s on sail and power vessels in the Caribbean, East and West Coast USA, Hawaii, Australia and the Mediterranean. As well as being a commercial captain, Jay is a qualified Sailing Instructor through US Sailing, and RYA Yacht Master Offshore Instructor. Jay is a dual citizen of USA and Australia, this enables him to teach all over the world. For more information about Seaward and the Call of the Sea, click here https://callofthesea.org
