A Conversation with Sir Keith Mills

A successful British businessman and entrepreneur, Sir Keith has a long career in marketing related businesses. His early years in London advertising agencies led to the innovation of Air Miles in the late 1980’s and the development of some of the world’s largest customer loyalty programs.

In 2003, Sir Keith was asked by the British Government to lead London’s bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which was won in 2005 after beating eight other cities including New York and Paris. Sir Keith then established the organization that delivered the 2012 games where he was Deputy Chairman.

Over the last 20 years Sir Keith has played leading roles in a number of other major sports teams and organizations, including the British America’s Cup team, the Premier League soccer team, Tottenham Hotspur, and the Invictus Games with Prince Harry.

Sir Keith didn’t really start sailing until he was forty and had a growing family.  He raced dinghies and chartered boats for family cruising.  His first serious racing came when he crewed on the Clipper RTW race with a young skipper named Alex Thomson in 1999. They won the race and became great friends and Sir Keith helped Alex set up his yacht racing business.

In addition to supporting Alex Thomson for the last 20 years, Sir Keith also pulled together the British America’s Cup team, TEAMORIGIN, and Land Rover BAR, both with Sir Ben Ainslie.

By finishing his single-handed, non-stop round-the-world race without assistance in 80 days, 19 hours, 23 minutes and 43 seconds, Alex Thomson (HUGO BOSS) became the fastest British sailor on that route. The Vendée Globe is a round-the-world single-handed yacht race, sailed non-stop and without assistance.

Sir Keith has personally owned and raced a TP52 and a Fast 40 and his current sailing project is the restoration of the Schooner Viveka commissioned and launched in San Francisco in October 2020. He plans to race Viveka in the not too distant future. He is a member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
