Trevor Steel on life as a Sailing Instructor

Trevor Steel grew up in Australia. Like most Australians, water was part of his upbringing and although sailing was always intrigued him, in Australia at the time, sailing was a pastime for the wealthy; something he was not.

It wasn’t until he moved to the US in the early 90’s that sailing came within reach. Over the next 30 years Trevor progressed from dinghies through to 62’; cutter ketches.

Trevor gained his Master’s License in 2009 by walking through the door of the local Coast Guard Examination Center and sitting the exams cold-turkey. In 2010 he joined OCSC Sailing School in Berkeley as a professional instructor eventually teaching the full gamut of US Sailing courses from Basic Keelboat through to Offshore Passage making. In 2018 he took on the role of Head of Instruction at OCSC and stayed with the school until Covid forced its closure in 2020.

Plus he is a Senior Navigator and Certified Instructor with the US Sail and Power Squadrons.
