Gregory Romano, NOAA, NWS Heritage Project

Heritage Program Lead and senior advisor for NOAA’s National Weather Service, Greg is historian, project manager, communications strategist, and chief storyteller. He champions NWS efforts to collect, catalog, and share the documents, photos, artifacts and stories of NWS’ more than 150-year history.

Greg served as NWS Public Affairs Director from 2004-2007, returning in 2014 as the agency’s Communications Director until 2019. In the interim, he was vice president of public relations for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and held various communications leadership positions at the U.S. General Services Administration.

In 2019, Greg moved to Arizona, relishing the desert vistas after 15 years in Washington, D.C. He is glad to be near his Southern California roots. Before moving to the DC area in 2003, he led programs for major PR firms and a Fortune 500 corporation in LA. He earned an MBA from Pepperdine University (1988) and a BA degree in Public Relations (1985) from the University of Southern California.

Off the clock, Greg can be found in the gym, taking long walks, or working on several writing and historic research projects. He’s also reengaging his life-long love of sailing, racing a Laser sailboat on the lakes in and around the Phoenix area. With his wife, Judy, a former AP journalist, he co-produces a blog chronicling their travel adventures.
